This week, Volkswagen has introduced a new team level for the iconic California camper van. The new ‘Surf’ trim level will sit between the current Beach Tour and Ocean models and will cost from £68,234. The Beach Camper starts at £60,398, the Beach Camper from £61,241 and then at the top of the lineup, the California Ocean which is from £72,980.

The Surf trim level is placed slap bang in the middle of the California range and while we await a brand new camper van, which will be using the all-electric ID. Buzz as a base – VW has chosen to expand the lineup to make things more appealing. Mechanically, the new Surf trim is identical to the other California vans, but has a few options less to bring the price down.

For example, the California Surf has the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine as the other models, with 148bhp. A more powerful version is available, with 201bhp but that is exclusive to the California Ocean. Inside, you can expect a gas hob, stainless steel sink, pop-up canvas roof and much more. If you configure it online, you’ll be able to chose between our and seven seats.

For the driver, it has pretty standard VW kit, with an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Three-zone climate control is also fitted as standard. Thankfully, as is adaptive cruise control, crosswind compensation and trailer assist.

The new California Surf is on sale now in the UK, priced from £68,234.
